SPACERHEAD
We recently sat down with SpacerHead, here’s how it went!
Perth-based trio Spacerhead is carving out a distinct space in the Australian music scene with their unique blend of influences, driving rhythms, and genre-defying sound. Formed by longtime friends Jordan Helliwell (drums), Tyson Helliwell (bass), and Lindsey Claridge (guitar/vocals), the band’s roots run deep in the local Perth music scene. Their latest ventures are proving to be game-changers, and the group’s journey is just beginning.
The Origins of Spacerhead
While the name Spacerhead might sound cryptic to some, it’s a nod to one of their favourite films, Eraserhead, paired with a dash of playful originality. But the band’s bond runs deeper than their choice of name. Jordan, Tyson, and Lindsey have been close friends for over a decade, and although they’d played in various bands together throughout the years, it wasn’t until recently that they formed Spacerhead.
“We’ve all been playing music for most of our lives at this point and have played in our fair share of bands over the years. Perth’s music scene has always had no shortage of amazing bands to go and watch,” Tyson reflects. “Seeing live music is something that always keeps us inspired. We’ve met most of our closest friends through the local scene.”
Breaking Ground with Their Debut
Spacerhead’s debut self-titled album, released in mid-2023, immediately garnered attention both locally and internationally. The release marked a significant milestone for the band, and it was soon followed by their first tour experiences in Australia. "It was such a great experience," Jordan shares. "We played some really great shows, met amazing bands and friends, and the support from everyone was overwhelming. We can't wait to do it again soon.”
Their tour not only showcased their music but also solidified their connection with the music community. With a string of new releases planned for the year ahead, including exciting splits with bands like Hidden Cycles and Moya Moya, Spacerhead is set for another massive year of live performances and collaborations.
Musical Influences and Evolution
Spacerhead’s sound is a melting pot of diverse influences. Drawing from a wide range of sources, their music channels the energy of labels like Touch and Go, Dischord, and SST records, while also embracing the ethereal and experimental elements of artists like Laurie Anderson, Alice Coltrane, and Leonard Cohen. The early Krautrock scene is another key influence, alongside a deep love for rhythmically driven grooves and abstract emotions.
“It doesn’t have to be catchy or have hooks; it just has to have transcendental movement,” says Lindsey, describing the band's approach to writing music. “Films, poetry, books, and visual arts are huge for us as well. Most of our songwriting stems from certain transcending emotions, abstract ideas, and subtexts.
The Spacerhead Live Experience
When it comes to live performances, Spacerhead doesn’t mess around. Known for their relentless, continuous noise without breaks, the band has earned a reputation for delivering an intense and captivating experience. “We don’t talk much between songs,” Tyson explains. “We just like to play continuous noise. The less we say, the better. No ‘this next song is about…’ kind of talk. We just love to play and get lost in the chaos.”
The raw energy of their performances often leads to broken instruments and bruises, but it’s all part of the thrill. “Sometimes we get lost in it a little too much,” Jordan admits with a grin. “But that’s the beauty of it—getting lost in the music and creating something that feels real.”
Career Highlights and What's Next
Looking back on their career so far, Spacerhead credits some of their defining moments to the bands they’ve had the privilege of supporting. “We’ve supported some of our favourite bands in Perth, like Chimers, Deerhoof, Mclusky, and Party Dozen,” Lindsey recalls. “Getting to hang out with these people and learn from them has been amazing.”
With an album in the works and more shows on the horizon, the band is gearing up for an exciting year ahead. The next stop? The Spliffs and Riffs festival at the Rosemount Hotel in March—a show the band is eagerly anticipating.
“We’re really looking forward to it,” Tyson says. “It’s always great to play at the Rosemount and be a part of such a legendary venue in Perth’s music scene.”
Looking to the Future
As they continue to evolve as a band, Spacerhead is excited for what’s next. Their upcoming releases, tours, and collaborations will undoubtedly solidify their place as one of Perth’s most exciting acts. Their blend of chaos, creativity, and connection to their roots makes Spacerhead a band to watch in 2024 and beyond.
“We’re excited to share our new music with everyone,” Jordan concludes. “There’s a lot more to come, and we’re ready to take things to the next level.”
Stay tuned for more from Spacerhead, and catch them live at the Spliffs and Riffs festival on March 2nd!
